Capes, cloaks, boleros, capelet, mantella, gabardine, shroud...
So I've got an obsessive personality. Not so much that it hampers my day to day life but enough that when I get stuck into something I have to see it through, it takes over, it's all I see and care about. TV series, I will watch them from start to finish season after season to the detriment of all other activities I'm supposed to be doing. Glitter, there was a good few months there where I was all about glitter, then there were a good few months after where I kept finding glitter all over my house, clothes, in my bags, car and even food. Puzzles, I will sit and work on them until completed be that in the small hours of the morning or an entire weekend and a headache from eye strain. Books, I HAVE to know how it ends but can never skip ahead. Beyonce's 'All the single ladies' video clip. At the moment I am slightly obsessed with capes, with clear indications I am going to be all consumed with them.
It started with a friend's comment about how I should make them for my shop. Then I watched a few Jane Austen movies and couldn't help noticing the sweet little jackets and capes the women wore. Then I found some lovely fabric on the weekend and decided to make a capelet out of it just for fun (and it actually turned out really well - which just added fuel to the fire). THEN last night I dreamed fantastical dreams and all the lead characters had fabulous clothes (they always do in my dreams) and even more fabulous cloakes and capes. So that's that. I'm actually running down to Sydney road tomorrow afternoon to find fabulous cape fabric and as soon as my current on the go projects are done it will be a flurry of velvets and wools, billowing volumes of silk lining, hoods to make little Red proud and collars to add attitude to any ensemble.
The message to take from this rant: be prepared to see a lot of capes on my respective sites.

My Saturday afternoon creation
I love that the lining (vintage satin) contrasts so brilliantly with the black velvet
View from the back
I had the flash on for this one so you can see the collar and cute matching button I made

I love Capes and Capelets!.
ReplyDeleteI have 3 but thats just the beginning.
One of the capelets is really cool with with 8 panels rather then 4 pieces.
it fits so well, I'm thinking I want more like it but can't find a pattern >_<
I look forward to hearing more about your cape adventures.
What a gorgeous piece! I think texture has been usurped a little by bold patterns in recent seasons. Capes are perfect for showing off gorgeous fabric textures - they move freely and catch light beautifully, and skim the most graceful part of the body perfectly (shoulders are da bomb!). Well done Leah! This is truly fabulous.
